whirlwinds

here are some photos-
from our exciting trip to Barnes and Noble the other night!

We are proudly displaying Images of America: Greeks in Queens-
my first 'not-by-me' published book.

What a privilege to have my book on the bookshelves
next to so many awesome authors-

It was one of my happiest moments
and there's so many more to come!

And see that guy in the photo?
I love him, i love him, i love him.

summer time menu

on one of my summer adventures,
the bestie suggested, in our absolute desperate hunger,
that we stop by this beautiful Thai place called amyours.

Usually, I don't have a taste for Thai Iced Tea- but
oh
my
god!
it was so awesome!

and we also preferred the curry puffs (bottom photo)

of course,
we communicated between bites
and muffled noises
and freudian slips
while we enjoyed yet another yummy meal together.

totally worth the trip there.
for info, you can e-mail!

love me,
the globetrotting gamine

notes from this place

Cocktail Culture
Planting Fields opens its spring exhibition, Cocktail Culture:

The Gold Glamorous Coast Years From Prohibition to 1960, March 31st at Coe Hall, open every day 11:30am – 3:30pm, through September 30th.

Coe Hall opens for the season with the exciting Cocktail Culture exhibition that can be seen every day, 11:30am – 3:30pm through September 30th. Starting with the 1920s, the show is a veritable feast for the eyes and includes fabulous clothes by some of the greatest designers of their time such as Mariano Fortuny and Elsa Schiaparelli. There are extraordinary works of art for women's feet made by Salvatore Ferragamo in the 1930s and by Dalman and I Miller. Also included are beautiful hats by Tatiana of Saks 5th Ave and by Adrian of Hollywood.

The cocktail is the consummate American medium, embodying a unique mixture of innovation, modernity and glamour. As shown in the exhibition, its history in fashion, bar accessories, and popular imagery, captures the spirit of an American phenomenon. The exhibit begins at the time that Coe Hall was being built, in 1920, the same year in which the Prohibition Amendment became law (it was repealed in 1933). For their new house at Planting Fields, Mr. and Mrs. William Robertson Coe had a very large secret storage space built in the basement for bottles of liquor. To this day there still is a massive safe door hidden behind a nondescript board and batten door that might be found in any service area. It is clear that the Coes did not want Prohibition enforcement agents to know that they had seven hundred square feet of cellar with shelves for bottle storage. In Mr. Coe's study, sometimes known as the den, the bar is also a hidden space, its entrance door seemingly part of the room's Tudor style oak paneling. The general ledgers originally maintained by Mr. Coe’s New York City office, and now in the Foundation’s archives, reveal that in 1918 and 1919, the two years leading up to Prohibition, Mr. Coe, whose favorite drink was the Manhattan – made from whisky, was stockpiling liquor. In 1918 he spent $10,021.65 (today about $143,834), in 1919, $25,328.07 (today about $316,376), for a grand total of $35,349.72 (today over $441,000). Champagne and whiskey were the two most stockpiled types of liquor. Other liquor purchases in 1918 and 1919 include sherry, brandy, vermouth, and wine. It is hard to determine Mr. Coe’s usual annual expenditure on alcohol because he only kept a separate entry for liquor in 1918 and 1919; in previous years it was included in general household expenses.

The new law made it illegal to make or transport liquor, but Long Island became one of the most notorious routes along which liquor was trucked from the island's many shore towns, where it had arrived by boat, mostly from Canada and the Caribbean, and then by road to New York City. Prohibition agents patrolled the highways ready to confiscate illegal liquor. Twice in 1924 agents caught Mrs. Coe’s brother, Henry Huddleston Rogers, having liquor shipped by his chauffeur from his Long Island mansion to his apartment at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York City. Following the second incident in December 1924, Rogers’ attorney produced a Federal Permit declaring the liquor transfers legal. The Volstead Act had a loophole that allowed the transportation of alcohol from one permanent residence to another provided a permit was obtained. During the same period of time, speakeasies in the village of Oyster Bay were notorious, several of them conveniently located near the waterfront. A letter to the Times in 1924 took the police to task for permitting such “goings on” to continue. The subject of cocktails  is often a feature of novels of the period including F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 The Great Gatsby, where at a party on the North Shore it is observed that, "The bar is in full swing, and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside...”

In the exhibition, dresses from the 1920s reflect women's new freedoms, including the vote (1920); the flappers' independence found expression in their new style un-corseted, skin-revealing sheath dress. The shorter skirts drew attention to the legs and the surfaces of dresses, which often had reflective beads, sequins and fringe, further emphasizing the flappers contagious energy. Hollywood embraced cocktail culture and the prototypical flapper. Films such as "Three Broadway Girls" (1932) with its sassy gold diggers dressed by Chanel, showed its stars in speakeasy bars at the height of Prohibition. Drink titles were inspired by popular fast moving dances, including the Charleston Cocktail and the Foxtrot Cocktail. Shoes in the 1920s reached an exceptional level of craftsmanship, innovation and ornate Art Deco designs, several types of which are included in the exhibition.

The repeal in 1933 of the 18th Amendment that had banned alcoholic drinks, reinvigorated cocktail culture. Innovative cocktail recipes, new forms of cocktail accessories, and supper and nightclubs proliferated. The term "cocktail dress" entered the fashion lexicon around 1935. With the ubiquitous little black dress a woman would wear costume jewelry and could top off her ensemble with a whimsical hat or fascinator. The typical 1930s silhouette was elongated and figure hugging, in contrast to the earlier sheath. Like the dresses, cocktail shakers took on the attenuated lines of the skyscraper aesthetic which was uniquely American. Speakeasies became legal restaurants, such as The Stork Club and the 21 Club, which still exists today and where Natalie Coe, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Coe, was photographed at the bar in the early 1930s.

During World War II, government restrictions on wool, silk, leather, and nylon, as well as on metal buttons, pleating and full skirts had a sobering effect on fashions. The era's military-inspired silhouette for women had padded shoulders, slim hips, and a knee-length skirt better suited to practical wartime work. Paris was no longer the epicenter of new fashion; therefore, American designers became more inventive with designs for accessories, making fanciful shoes, hats, and gloves which was an easy and economical way to embellish an outfit. At the same time new materials, including plastics and synthetic fabrics, were used in innovative ways. With the advent of food rationing, the cocktail party became a convenient way to entertain without the pressure of providing a lavish spread of food.

After the war there was a return to the traditional and overtly feminine fashion silhouette. In 1947 Paris resumed its role as the center of couture with Christian Dior's revolutionary New Look silhouette, featuring a wasp waist, padded hips, rounded shoulders, and lavish full skirt; this was a huge change from the sobriety of the war years. In regard to cocktails, gender-specific drinks became the rage; for women, brightly colored drinks - the Pink Lady and the Brandy Flip. For men cocktails were more restrained - the Manhattan, Old Fashioned, or Martini.

At Planting Fields the cocktail era came to an end in 1955 with the death of Mr. Coe. His second wife, Caroline, died in 1960. And so the exhibition ends with the traditional ladylike cocktail ensembles with the requisite hat and gloves of the late 1950s, and with a glimpse of the quintessential cocktail dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Cocktail culture, which began so many years ago, is now indelibly pressed into the fabric of American culture, if not world-wide. While styles may change the cocktail and its rituals are undoubtedly here to stay.

8.22.2012

almost!

(photo shot by me, long island, 2012)

this morning, i woke up to write a few notes and found that i couldn't. there has been so much going on that the only thing that gets to go down on paper is to-do list items and ideas for various manuscripts.

not that i'm complaining.

in a little over a month, my first "any kind" of book will be released in bookstores. Images of America: Greeks in Queens was a brain child born to honor my Grandparents and those who have gone before us who were brave enough to step into a whole new world.

Not a lot of us are so brave, and I am super lucky to be born to such a rich background, heritage, family.

That being said, have I mentioned that it's on pre-order and already killin'? Woo hoo!

Here's the amazon linky, and the Barnes and Noble linky.

Me being insanely happy? Check. Celebrations with amazing people? Check! Other opportunities abundant? Check check!

But mostly, just being happy to be alive works for me.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your summers!!!

the learning saga

i've been very reflective-selective this year, the big 3-0.
selective of who i'm friends with, who i hang out with, where we go- this is something that i've earned.
more things like that of course, but everyday i am so thankful for my life and grateful to the people who have flitted in and out of it.

reflecting on how things could have been if people never did this makes me all the more thankful.

20 (more)  unrelated things that i've learned about myself:

  1. i could care less about awards shows (but yes, i like the dresses)
  2. i prefer to live in jeans.
  3. swimming makes me really happy.
  4. i am very not materialistic, and like to wear the crap out of my favorite clothing pieces.
  5. what people say about me and think about me makes me sad that their lives are dull.
  6. i make the best tzatziki sauce.
  7. my wedding day was not the happiest day of my life- the day i knew i was going to spend the rest of my life with my husband was. having a party to celebrate that fact was nice, but not the be all, end all.
  8. if you don't stick up for and stick with your own goals and dreams, you'll look back resenting only yourself. my Momma taught me this when i was little, so I have no reason to look back.
  9. if the "important people" in your life don't celebrate your own goals and dreams as you do/with you--then they aren't important.
  10. those dreams and goals i'd laid out so many times over have already gone above and beyond, and i'm not even 31 yet!!
  11. the people who are happy for things that you are happy about are keepers- the rest will always treat you like an acquaintance for whatever their reasons are. don't try to figure them or their reasons out- it'll waste your time because they don't have reasons.
  12. family is everything- and it goes beyond blood.
  13. happiness starts within yourself.
  14. having a bucket list could be an addiction. (but this is me- so really, any list is an addiction!!)
  15. green tea makes me happy.
  16. i'm a procrastinator, and it is something i struggle with every day.
  17. i can write more than one book at a time.
  18. i wish i could dedicate more time to illustrating and photography, as i do with writing.
  19. after 7 years of preparing 1-3 meals a day, i've gotten a hang of this cooking thing! you can tell by my menu blogs thinning out :)
  20. i am thankful for everything everyday. seriously. i whisper thank you all the time.
what have you learned this year?

simply happy.

hi bloggie friends!

how are you? i hope all is well in your worlds. right now, the clock is ticking for me to do some last minute EVERYTHING before easter time. a few months ago, i had no idea how busy my life would be though i wanted it to be.

i am so happy that a lot of you who know of my project(s) have e-mailed me to wish me well. i need it! my to do lists have had babies. i don't know what they've named them...as of yet. (this is me being silly on only one cup of coffee today.)

teeny to do list for this...month?:
  1. find someone to help me redesign this website...if you know someone, please pass them along to me :)
  2. fix my master-to do list
  3. send one of my projects on their merry way
  4. start researching for the next big milestone in my life
  5. plan plan plan
  6. work on resume, because it needs a total revamping
  7. mark dates of events coming up on a calendar- i have been really bad about this and i don't mean to be
  8. buy mousse for my unruly hair-- feel free to send me the name of a great one!
  9. use old papers for scrap paper- something i've been doing for the last 4 years and you should, too! especially if you're into lists like me!
  10. learn to make a new dish...my cooking has been amazing lately. yes. i am tooting my own horn. toot.
  11. blog more. i've been lagging. the photos sitting pretty on discs will not be pleased about this. (this goes hand in hand with the new website idea- maybe i'm holding out?)
if you want me to add anything to my list, life, to photograph for your amusement, let me know! until then...happy weekend [even though it's thursday!]

also, if anyone is willing to do an agenda book giveaway- please just send one to me. i need it. lol

3.18.2012

dream a little dream....

everyday, one of my best friends puts a status up on facebook about the things she is thankful for. i love this practice. even though with some projects, i feel that i've bitten off more than i can chew-- i know it benefits me to be grateful for the project itself. and for almost completing it!

so, today, inspired by bff, my grateful list is:

  • the weather we've been having, coupled with the fact that plants, flowers and trees are already blooming- in mid March!!!! In NEW YORK!!!
  • being born into my family, because- yay :)
  • LML- who I love so much and has bought so much of everything- especially happiness- into my life.
  • for growing up, literally and sometimes painfully, with LML
  • for my friends- because I got the best ones. i know it.
  • for my planning and consulting skills...which it took others to point out to me (especially LML, who has learned to be patient)
  • for my puppy, because he thinks he's a person.
  • to do lists. they make me happy.
  • technology- because sometimes, it helps.
also- regarding dreams.
i'm a whopper when it comes to dreaming things up---

for example, last night it was a kind of rewind to four years ago and i was having conversations with people i haven't seen since during my daily routine THEN.

figure that one out.

so to my friends, and dream-friends...
thanks for listening!! and being there ;)

(please tell me i am not the only one dreaming insane dreams!)

3.05.2012

life is...

me and my best friend in '09

freaking awesome.
i'm sorry that i have been so vague- there has been so much activity going on in my neck of the woods that it's CRAZY!

i have been clocking in office hours trying to hit my deadlines- and most times, not even that feels like work. when i'm not in my office, i am re-planning it's layout, constantly working on these projects, and catching up with friends and loved ones.

i am truly, truly blessed and could not ask for anything more.

happy news:

  • having beer at a brewery is the funnest thing ever!
  • seeing friends over coffee, lunch, brunch, dinner or whatever it may be is flippin' awesome.
  • i have so many books to catch up on after i am done with said projects, that I cannot wait to post my reviews.
  • my projects are...

wait for it...

almost complete!! woooooooo!!

i have to get planning this huge things going on for 2012. i am seriously considering opening a p.r. agency at this point :))

hope y'all have a happy monday! and thank you for your kind words through e-mails and facebook :)

more than i can chew?

hello, friends.
pup here...
keeping you company
while Mommy is singing and happily working on her lists.
see, a lot has been going on-- people coming by, likely to see me.
so, i'm happy, too.

i've heard and travelled with Mommy
with colleagues and to meetings and appointments-
i have to say, she's a busy bee.

so i KNOW this constant hustle and bustle
lead her and my Daddy to all sorts of conversations--
and they are excited!

yeah, about me. it has to be about me.
then again, i always bite off more than i can chew.

i think mommy is happy with me and
also, with more books in the works?
new plans?
about me or for ME?

my parents are so cool.

is there anything new
in your world?
how are you?

did you bring me a cookie?

woof,
pup

2.25.2012

quote saturday

quote taken from twilight: eclipse

“This wasn’t a choice between you and Jacob—it was a choice between who I should be and who I am. I’ve always felt out of step—like, literally stumbling through my life—I’ve never felt normal, because I’m not normal. I don’t want to be. I’ve had to face death, and loss, and pain in your world but I’ve also never felt stronger—like, more real; more myself—because it’s my world, too. It’s where I belong.”

'cuz that's how i felt before i got married, too ;)

2.20.2012

why blog?

why blog?

what's the point really, you think to yourself as you begin to type. is anyone going to read it?
will people enjoy it?
am i going to sell my soul to get more followers?

the truth is, even when i first started blogging
(was it august 2009 or 2010? who knows...)
i wanted to do it for me, not for the fame.

my reasons were this:
  • crazy turmoil from circumstances that couldn't be helped at the time (and now i am so thankful for!)
  • the inane urge to document everything- which i'd been doing in journals for years
  • finally making contact with people who were more like me- something i'd never experienced til that fateful day
  • writing- it was always in my blood, and blogging got the juices flowing. it was the clearest time of the day when i was writing.
now i wonder-
who blogs other than creative types like me?
is blogging more influential for people to receive job offers and opportunities?
(it works for some people, truth be told--i am one of them but not to the
extent of others opportunities...it's still amazing!)

my entire life literally changed for the better
upon having a blog.
i have met so many amazing people,
been given so many opportunities...
but even more so, the insights i actually gave myself
have been invaluable.

what a crazy world we live in
when your craft
can transform your life
and fill it with magic.

will i ever rename, change,
give up on this blog?
why?

it's an extension of me.
professional, unprofessional,
way too complicated,
not caring if people like it or me or not...
too many pictures, ideas, memories?

i blog for me.

why would i change myself?
or my blog, for that matter ;)

hope y'all feel the same about your own blogging/writing experiences!

2.15.2012

life

things i love about life today...and no pictures are needed, i assure you :)

  • puppy kisses
  • everything falling into place, work-wise
  • people who care about me and each other-- my closest group is made up of the most amazing people and for that i am truly thankful
  • books
  • tea
  • My Mommies
  • my husband, who was created for me and of this i am certain!!
hope you're having a happy wednesday!

2.14.2012

2.13.2012

this and that

(photo taken in a rainy Washington D.C.)

thank you for wandering over to my blog! how are you?
i hope everything is going brilliantly for you!

yes- there has been a LOT going on, to answer your questions
and i am SO glad to have received your e-mails and comments :)

the two major projects that i've been working on are constant works in progress--
the only thing keeping me sane is the fact
that the deadline for one of them
is in april.
serious and exciting stuff!

i love the opportunities and possibilities that winter brings about--
it's kind of cathartic and inspires me to do so much
(re:: last years' happiness project goals)

in the midst of that, there has been much future planning of plans ;)
going on between LML and friends
it's uber-exciting and all will be revealed in due time.

i am thankful for so much,
and every morning when i wake up
i smile and give the puppy a squeeze and thank goodness
that i am alive
and happy...

and i hope you are doing the same!

live the life, people :)

love me,
the globetrotting gamine

adoption from pup's point of view

hi.
pup here.
how is your weekend going?

i just wanted to share a little story with you.

7 years ago i was born.
and 8 months after that
i was adopted by this really tall guy
who fell right in love with me.

he took me away with all of my stuff
and on a long journey from where i used to live
we pulled up to what he said was my new home.

i was so scared
that he was going to leave me
somewhere i didn't want to be
because the truth is...
i liked him.

so he walked me into this house,
knocked on a door and ordered someone to hide...
and then he set me down on the floor.

doing a quick check-- the house smelled good...
it was decorated for autumn
and even though it was very clean
you could tell that a lot of people were always there

then this new guy yells to no one, to open the door
and i saw this frazzled looking girl
who was suddenly so happy to see me!!

ME!
was this my new home?
were these my new people??
so i ran and ran and ran
for what felt like forever

until i took a running leap into the girls arms
and licked her ferociously
so that i could show her i wanted to stay....

and i wanted to make sure
that the guy who smelled good
knew i liked him, too,
so i ran to him and gave him some licks.

and then the most wonderful things happened.
they scooped me up into both of their arms
and gave me hugs...

and shut the door.

they told me i was home.

1.27.2012

firstly...

(from my 'happiness looks like...' album, shot by me!)

i know that writers' have this problem: when they're staring at something for so long or they're reading/researching so much, they stop and wonder..."firstly. FIRSTLY. Hm, is that a word??"

today, firstly doesn't sound like a word.

so, first off i want to thank my bloggie friends- for your kind emails, messages, comments. i love you. you have no idea how happy it makes me that someone reads/looks at my photos/and shares my thought bubbles. thank you times infinity.

2012 has been severely whipping me around left to right. i am so excited about the major projects and opportunities that have fallen across my "now in ruins" office...and thankful. i know that the opportunities are "wow" and that they've come into my life because of the decisions i've made so far.

2012 is my year for being super-conscious of everything going on around me.
things like...what food i put into my body, because after many hours of research what i'd been eating ten years ago really makes me sick to think i did that to myself.
...who i hang out with. let's face it, there are certain people we want to leave in the past and i am so thankful that people have stayed in my past. oh, and there's those people you just have a feeling about? do you know what i mean? like...wow, i've heard all these things about this person so why would i put myself through that?a long time ago i realized i'm past all the small minded people. my friends are so amazing and can pretty much put a smile on my face at anytime. especially my nephews.
...what i read- um, big plus. love love love what i'm reading now which i'll blog about soon ;)

granted, there are major things i need to work on that will make me even more happy, if that's possible. for the past few years, i have had my ups and downs but it's only looking like up's are happening this year.

i promise to tell you about all of these soon. in the meantime, it's back to the writing, drawing and organizing board for me...

how are you??

love love love,
me

an open mind

[christina rozeas photography 2011]
((note:: obviously, this post never posted when i told it to!! thank you for reading and understanding!!*))
how many times do you just know your mind is completely open? you know that you are the one who observes more without judging, who is consantly hearing that little voice in his/her head?

how many times do you come face to face with people who are totally close minded for some (whatever it is) reason- and you still want to kick them in the treats even though you know you are judging?

that's me.

i am completely aware that some situations are less than sunny, and that it takes a certain type of person to be a certain kind of way- but yikes, some people.

so this year i think my resolution should be to push these people completely out of my mind. i mean, let's face it- they have enough drama going on that they've only created themselves- what do they need my kick in the treats for?

it wouldn't help 'em- i can tell you that.
as for me- i cannot wait for 2012. we've already celebrated so many fun events in the past few days (only 9? cheeeee)

what do you do to keep positive? please let me know
bring it on, baby.
