dear honduras

Honduras Checklist:
  • sight-see
  • take pictures
  • go to the best beach
  • talk to the locals to find out where to go for lunch
  • go to lunch and eat something new and crazy
  • so there we were: roatan, honduras. we were on an adventure, exploring everything we possibly could and having so much fun...
then we had to battle itty bitty sand flies on the beach so i wrapped myself up like a mummy while LML sought solace in the sea.

of course, we find out that the locals swore by this place, so we chose to have a yummy lunch of:
rice
beans
plantains
local beer (holy moly, that beer pictured below is awesome)
and iguana.

yes, iguana.

pictures below of our meal with a friend...

though it sounds creepy and weird...
it really wasn't- it was quite good.

this deters a little from our nightly vegetarian feasts we usually prepare back home
but everyone needs to come out of their comfort zone somehow and
we are so glad we did.

here's to good food and good friends ;)

but it is assumed that this area was once underwater

LML, very hot (and muy caliente!) in front of the boulders

exploring aruba is wonderful
i highly recommend it!!

people love it when i freak out

can you tell i'm freaking out in these photos?
i wanted to live my life to the fullest possible before i was 30...
here was move #102940- play with stingrays, swim with them, feed them...

and going underwater to find them before they swarmed at me!

now, i was freaking out before they touched me...
but when they did, i realized they were so soft and velvety
(my friend would love my usage of that word)
and very cute!

they were uber-friendly,
and so much so that they gave our trainer/guide hugs!
i was upset that they didn't hug me :(

but i did get to feed them...
that's a calamari i was holding up for my photo op
before i fed it to them...

for now
(like i would tell you when i'm off and about again :) surprises are better)
i am new york bound...

so any crazy thing you'd like me to do/post about
before i'm 30...
let me know and i'll post about it...
or try to do it!

have you ever done "crazy to do's before you're 30" things like this?
i'd love to hear!

also, today is the last day of my book giveaway-
i will announce the winner later <3

and...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY YUMMY NEPHEW!!! YAY!

Visions of Kalamata, Greece

I had a friend once who told me, "There's nothing in Kalamata but olive trees!"
I asked her if she got off the cruise ship she'd been on and she told me no.

How are you to know what is ANYWHERE unless you explore?

I didn't know then that I was going to marry someone from Kalamata. (well, i KIND OF did, because I'd been crushing on LML since I was 13 and i just *knew*)...so for our "honeymoon" we went to Greece again but for the first time together.

I fell in love with Kalamata.
It's part city, part country and part awesome beach vacation.

Not that we were able to go swimming the December we went.

see, that's the town square. during tourist season, it's filled with little tables and chairs in front of the coffeehouses, all the shops are open and people are just spilling around on the way to some appointment or the other. It's a hop, skip and a jump from the country OR beach. Love it.

That's me in front of the train station. Though I haven't been on it, I've heard it takes you to Olympia...where I also haven't been yet, though LML has.
I can't wait to go!

Welcome to the beach/boardwalk/marina area. The beaches are awesome.
These pictures really make me want to whip out that camera again.

Anyone want to teach me how to use a darkroom?!

LML's Grandfather's old bicycle on the rooftop.

Though I don't tell LML all the time, I can't wait to go back
but at the same time
there's so much world to see!

is there anywhere in the world that is the most special to you?
i'd love to hear your stories <3

fascinating

i find myself in awe of the world around me-
the sights,
the places,
the people,
the food.

it's probably my parents fault for throwing books at me at 4 years old...
to read, not in an abusive manner!
(i really have to work on my wording <3)

the way people act, the habitats they live in,
the friends they make and keep.

everything is always changing,
and nothing is changing.

it's crazy when you sit down and try to think about it.
it's always, "if it's not one thing, it's another"

no matter where you live or even travel,
one will never scratch the surface of the world.

it's awesome.
in a way i feel it mirrors people-
scrape as you might, you will never discover what an indivual is all about..
there's so much inside of each and everyone of us
that one lifetime is hardly enough.

there are the people who wear their hearts on their sleeves,
the straight-shooters,
and so many other kinds of people.

LML and I have known each other 17+ years
and there's still so much to tell each other
so much to learn...so much to do!

i'm eternally grateful i married my best friend.
who better to brave the world with?!

<3

so much to learn, in so little time
does anyone else feel this way?

Tamara Mellon- Inspiration

Tamara Mellon is the Jimmy Choo founder. Did you know that? I learned about her on Oprah a few years back and then she was in an In Style interview Feb. 2008.

Finding the article a clipped out back then gave me the inspration for this post...
she was featured in Harper's Bazzar here.

Look at the pictures of her home (these are the rooms that i love):

read about her on wikipedia or here (taken from wikipedia):
[edit] Early lifeMellon was born in London, on 7 July 1967, the daughter of Tom Yeardye, a successful entrepreneur and Ann (Davis) Yeardye, a former Chanel model. She was educated in Berkshire at Heathfield St Mary's School, in Beverly Hills and in Switzerland.

[edit] CareerMellon began her career at Phyllis Walters Public Relations, Mirabella, and followed as accessories editor for British Vogue in 1990.

Recognizing the potential for development of high-end designer accessories, Mellon approached bespoke shoe-maker Mr Jimmy Choo with the idea of launching a ready-to-wear shoe company. As co-founder of the Jimmy Choo Company, Tamara secured funding from her father, for the creation of her business, and sourced factories in Italy. In addition, she set up an office in Italy to handle production, quality control and shipping. By 2001, Jimmy Choo had over 100 wholesale clients including Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman, and the collections accounted for over 50% of the production of several of these factories.

The design collaboration between Tamara and creative director Sandra Choi led to an immediate demand from other top stores. The Motcombe Street store was followed by stores in New York, Las Vegas and Beverly Hills. In April 2001, the expansion of Jimmy Choo took a step forward with the announcement of a new partnership with Equinox Luxury Holdings Ltd. Acquiring Mr Choo’s share of the ready to wear business, Equinox’s Chief Executive Robert Bensoussan became CEO of Jimmy Choo. This transaction enabled Jimmy Choo to achieve outstanding results, with the introduction of handbag and small leather goods collections. In November 2004, with the company valued at £101 million, Hicks Muse announced the majority acquisition of Jimmy Choo — yet another significant move for the future development of the company.

From the first boutique opened in Knightsbridge, London, in 1996, Jimmy Choo now has a total of 39 stores, including London (Sloane Street & New Bond Street), New York, Beverly Hills, Washington D.C., Boston, Dallas, Moscow, Milan and Hong Kong and is distributed by select stores worldwide. In 2007, Mellon made another appearance on the Sunday Times Rich List, where she is ranked as the 751st richest person in the UK, with an estimated wealth of £99 million.[1] She is also ranked as the 64th richest woman in Britain.[2]

Mellon was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 Birthday Honours.[3]

[edit] Public and Political ActivitiesMellon is a member of the New Enterprise Council, a group of entrepreneurs who advise the Conservative Party (UK) on policies related to the needs of business. [1]

On the 9th November 2010 she was named as a 'global trade envoy for Britain' by the British Government. She will have a "roving brief to promote the country’s booming fashion industry overseas".[4]

her motivation is my inspiration today.

the old print shop

i am working diligently on completing any and all items on every single one of my to do lists today.
before beginning to illustrate some pages in my next children's book again, i was looking up 'The Old Print Shop'.

It's freaking awesome.
As a globetrotter, I have serious map hysteria (surprisingly enough, I am not a hoarder. imagine that) to the point where i hang on to and organize every map known to man. Stumbling upon The Old Print Shop made me feel so happy. Look at these beauties:

the above are world maps. to see how much they are worth and all info, click here.

just freaking awesome.

when i win the lotto,
i will be hanging some of these
in my mansion.

yep :)

travel: aruba

i've been reading so much about aruba lately-
it's literally popping up everywhere!

i guess it all started back in may,
when i found a really cool article in New York magazine.

things to know about aruba:
  • 18 miles north of Venezuela
  • dry climate
  • can literally go there all year round
things to do in aruba:
  • if you want a lazy swimming day, go to the beach on the west coast
  • west coast if you want to snorkel, kitesurf, waterski, and parasail
  • east coast ("wild coast") to hunt for coves carved out of limestone
  • shop! malls and boutiques are downtown
cool facts:
  • Bon Bini festival in Oranjestad every Tuesday
  • first ever Aruba film festival was this past June
  • a lot of aloe, a LOT of cactus'!

there is so much more i have to tell you about aruba...but i am taking my time. there is so much to share!

jellyfish around the world

i have been to quite a few places,
and i have learned that
when it comes to nature
you can never be too careful.
so the next time you're at the beach,
please remember:
 the above photo is expected.
expected.

 NOT a plastic bag.
VERY unexpected
 unexpected!
(as usual, all photos unless otherwise noted are shot by me!)

even these guys run away from their blue creepy cousins.

Blue Jellyfish as told by wikipedia:

Cyanea lamarckii has a blue or yellow tone and grows to approximately 10 to 20 cm, but specimens can grow to 30 cm.[2] In Scandinavian seas this species rarely grows larger than 15 cm.

This jellyfish has many stinging tentacles. The four mouth arms are large with many wrinkles and ripples.

um. ew?

i love you also, St. Thomas.

ambiance.

sigh. it's really like you're coming home...
that's what one guy we met there told us once...
that Glady's Cafe is like his second home-
every time he's in St. Thomas he eats at Glady's!

This above photo is absolute heaven and only Gladys' can pull the recipe off!

ok, hello? cajun curried chicken, mac and cheese, and rice and beans...
i REALLLLLY love glady's!

so does this guy, who was seen hanging out (literally) outside of
Glady's Cafe!
