lieb cellars

Lieb Cellars
35 Cox Neck Road, Mattituck NY

Since we are unable to went for winter/this horrible weather to end, we took a siesta out to wine country some weeks back. It was there we fell upon Lieb, where we did a wine and chocolate pairing that was exquisite. Chocolate featured Bon Bons Chocolatier of Huntington <3

We were also touched to see that one of their 'wines for the cause' was the Syrah.

Why it's touching?
"Syrah is one of our favorite grapes and was also the name of our vineyard mascot, who we recently lost to kidney disease. This Syrah wine has been created in his memory. 20% of the proceeds from sales of this wine will be donated to the non-profit Animal Medical Center in NYC for research and treatment of kidney disease in animals. For more information visit:

http://www.amcny.org/supportamc/syrah.aspx.

This is a cool climate Syrah without the jammy fruit found in many warm climate Syrah/Shiraz. Instead it is a medium bodied with balanced acidity, showing black fruit and spiced earth. Well-integrated oak aging produces hints of clove and soft tannins, while the addition of Merlot rounds out the mouthfeel."

Freaking awesome, Lieb. Though we had more than one wine that was very flavorful- we can't remember so we'll have to come back <3

Greenport Menu: Noah's

This past weekend, I have to say that LML and I felt it would be perfect to escape. We like Valentine's Day but it was totally not the reason we ran away.

We visited Noah's for the first time since it's opened. It's always packed to the brim and we figured since everyone had already made reservations, let's pop in make some. The hostess told us we didn't need any.

We didn't know that later on after walking in, they would tell us that we needed one! But they were wonderful and understanding and let us dine with them.

I have to admit, I was uber-excited about the menu except for one thing- almost everything had cheese.

Cue the lactose intolerance.
I figured that I might as well indulge since it's my first time there.

We ordered...
anchovy crustini's *yum-ness*
and
scallops covered with gruyere (if memory serves me correctly) and champagne.

the anchovy crustini's (i mayhave improv-ed the name)  were AWESOME...
though I think the scallop small plate kept me up all night. It's sad because the food was GOOD!

i had the wild rice and mushroom risotto- which was the only thing on the menu without cheese.

LML had a kobe beef burger which he was expecting to be WOW-ness...except it was just plain kobe beef with no pop of flavor other than the fries on the plate.

all in all, we would return to noah's again.
and i would order items without cheese.

love me,
the globetrotting gamine

edited to add: i forgot to say that we ordered the cabernet sauvignon with dinner. i really should have purchased the bottle and finished it back at the homestead. mmmmmmm!

car photography-I

good afternoon and welcome to my car photography posts. i was cleaning out my office today for our upcoming months of fun together (winter was wearing out both me AND my popsicle office)- and realized that i never posted about one of my favorite pasttimes.

of course, don't attempt to take pictures while you are DRIVING the car- that has proven foolish and dangerous. i have gotten quite good at this hobby through the years- i never want to miss anything...though sometimes i find i don't photograph anything when i'm having a crazy-good time, but pure happiness and a quiet moment finds me indulging in my car photography!

(a little replica of a church- sooooo cute!)

i do this often when i am a passenger...can you tell that i am often a passenger (of life?)

I love Greenport

(all photos taken by me, The Globetrotting Gamine 2010)

Excerpt from one of my favorite sites (not by me!):

"The History of Greenport, LI

East of Manhattan, beyond some of the world's most renowned vineyards and at the edge of Long Island's vast farmlands, you will find yourself at the end of the earth, immersed in one of the hottest spots on the East Coast -- Greenport. This small seaside village has become famous for its quaint retail establishments, fine dining, and nightlife like no other, but what makes Greenport so unique is its rich maritime history, which has been tastefully preserved for more than three centuries.

First settled in 1682, Greenport was originally comprised of two settlements. Stirling, located on the West side of Stirling Basin on the North edge of what is now Greenport, ran along King's Highway (now known as Route 48 or North Road) and faced the Long Island Sound. The other, named Green Hill, overlooked the harbor. As the two settlements flourished the residents of Stirling and Green Hill officially merged the two and, in 1831, officially adopted the name Greenport. In 1838, it became the second incorporated village in the State of New York.

In the years that followed, Greenport became a prominent whaling port and, at the height of the whaling boom, the Long Island railroad was extended to village, making it the main link in the rail-steamboat route between New York and Boston. By 1856, Greenport boasted 250 homes, 16 stores and 3 shipyards. As the whaling industry faded, commercial fishing increased, keeping the local boat yards in business. During Prohibition, rumrunners became active off Greenport and a Coast Guard station eventually opened in the village. Local shipyards further profited, doing business for both the good guys and the bad. To catch a glimpse of Greenport's past, make sure that the East End Seaport Museum, Bootleg Alley, and some of the villages remaining shipyards are on your "to do" list.

It's not just the maritime industry, however, that helped put this village on the map. Historically, Greenport has also been attractive to some of America's most renowned artists including Walt Whitman; playwright William Gillette; painter Whitney Hubbard; and author & illustrator Marjorie Flack. Many of their homes, or the homes of those who connected them to the village, still stand today. Visitors can spend an entire day just exploring the historic homes of Greenport.

Today, artists continue to find a home in Greenport, including award-winning actress Peg Murray; sculptor Arden Scott; craftsperson Gail Horton and award winning songwriter Hugh Prestwood. With outdoor theater, live music events, and a plethora of galleries, the arts are still very much alive in the Village of Greenport.

Most recently, the Village of Greenport has upped the ante on fun with the creation of the expansive Mitchell Park, which overlooks Greenport Harbor. Although some of the park is still under construction, the outdoor amphitheater, harbor side boardwalk and public docks are quite active during the busy summer months. The icing on the cake, however, is Greenport's famous carousel. Built in the 1920s as a carnival ride in North Tonawanda, New York, the 40-foot carousel was donated to the village of Greenport in 1995 by Northrop-Grumman. Greenport boasts a population of just over 2,000 and, although the village seemingly bursts at the seams when thousands more visitors descend during the tourist season, there is plenty of room for everyone. To get an extra dose of Greenport's arts and culture, ring in the New Year during the village's annual First Night festival or celebrate its rich nautical history, during the village's annual Maritime Festival, which takes place each September. Nevertheless, no matter what time of year you visit, you will find a warm welcome in Greenport and, we are sure, you will have a great time! "

The pictures I've posted are from the Greenport Jail, now a museum. I didn't know this, but i looked it up and http://www.greenportvillage.com/activities.html said this:

"Greenport Jail and Police Museum

1917 Jail featuring memorabilia, pictures andhistoric items from the Greenport Police Department including photos, patchs and items of other police forces in the U.S."

It's just awesome
and you should visit!

4th of July Vacation Menu- II

photo shot by *me* Sag Harbor, 2010

I fell in love with Sag Harbor. So did LML.
We enjoyed an incredible dinner at B Smith's. (i love you, B Smith's)

I have to admit, we were kind of scared after speaking with the staff about dinner. They reminded us that they are not specifically a seafood restaurant even though we thought they were.

the food was OUTSTANDING.

Ever have fried oysters with wasabi mayo??:

We placed 2 or 3 orders of just that. Holy crap.
We demolished some chicken wings. You would think these 2 appetizers would kill our tummies? Hell to the no.
Pictures include my shrimps with yummy black rice, and my LML's stuffed swordfish...or some fish.

amazzzziiinnnnnggg...like i hope my bloggie friend july's have been <3

4th of July Vacation Menu- I

The above pictures were taken by *me* at Port Bello Restaurant in Long Island. It is just the. best. food. ever.
A group of us went, and more than half ordered the Zuppa di Pesce. We were all very happy and ultimately satisfied. Our tummies thanked us.

After a long stroll, we wound up at Vine Cafe in the town of Greenport. The photo below is the cupcake that I ordered....
and here is a photo of the group of us at Vine Cafe...
