rachel zoe

i just finished this book, and i couldn't put it down!

rachel zoe is just awesome, i love her.

as a once-travel blogger (which is what i will go back to once chemo is over!) i had to share this excerpt from her book:

Holiday Pack List for Hot Weather:

"bikinis, cute bras, and boy shorts to wear under sheer dresses (and that can double as swimwear when the moment arises); tunics, caftans, and sundresses that can serve as dresses or tops. A fabulous belt can turn a sarong into a dress, so pack one that sits on the waist, in leather or raffia, or a color woven or gold chain.
Anything in lighter, brighter colors, and definitely white, is appropriate, and leave most of the black and any items that require dry cleaning at home. leave the pumps behind, too. this is one of the few times I'll pack flip flops, and a sandal of any kind is requisite. Also, great are espadrilles and open toe wedges. Clothes might be minimal, but not accessories. Stockpile hoops, anything ethnic, and bangles (island cheapies are such a great addition). And layer yellow gold on top of a St. Tropez tan for a look that is always uberfabulous."

more to come!

love ava gardner

a huge fashion inspiration of mine is ava gardner, pictured above in a collage i created using photos on her website (and using google images).
isn't she stunning?

i can't recall when it was i first saw Venus, a movie in which Ms. Gardner starred...but the actual talent that she had as an actress was insiring. totally, not like some of the actresses there are now.

sorry- i believe that back then they had actual talent- and that now we push it to the wayside for other reasons (like you know this guy, and you're her kid, and oh look, reality TV...egads!)

ms. ava gardner is one of the quintessential beauties that will probably always live in the hearts of many. style, grace, beauty, intelligence- how do you go wrong?

Travel Style: Indiana Jones

Hi Bloggie Friends:

How are you? I hope you don't mind my thousand posts today- truth be told, I have been backed up! I am looking forward to reading what has been going on in your worlds...and speaking of worlds: it got me thinking.

If I wasn't home, I'd be travelling- and if I could have any job, it would have to involve travel.

The Indiana Jones movies are a DVD set that I've yet to require. LML and I own an interesting collection of movies, yet that set has never battled its way in.

Why I want the DVD set? To re-familiarize myself with the movie, dream bigger...and oh YEAH!

The clothes:

one of the most interesting characters...
but not the most interesting man in the world...

to me, that's this guy:

travel*style: pocket watches

*photo taken by Ms. New Jersey 2009/2010 last August, during the hurricane in the Hamptons*

That's me and LML in the photo above. Somehow, we've become obsessed with any kind of time piece in existence. Around my house, there are at least 2 clocks in each room. I believe in the past I have purchased for him 2 pocket watches...because he had an obsession with time pieces since he was a younger chap.

However, I have not always had an obsession. I hated wearing a watch...possibly because I never had one that I liked until we began dating.

Here is an excerpt from wikipedia about the wonder that is the pocket watch:
"A pocket watch (or pocketwatch) is a watch that is made to be carried in a pocket, as opposed to a wristwatch, which is strapped to the wrist. They were the most common type of watch from their development in the 16th century until wristwatches became popular after World War I during which a transitional design, trench watches were used by the military. Pocket watches generally have an attached chain to allow them to be secured to a waistcoat, lapel, or belt loop, and to prevent them from being dropped. Watches were also mounted on a short leather strap or fob, when a long chain would have been cumbersome or likely to catch on things. This fob could also provide a protective flap over their face and crystal. Women's watches were normally of this form, with a fob that was more decorative than protective. Chains were frequently decorated with a silver or enamel pendant, often carrying the arms of some club or society, which by association also became known as a fob. Ostensibly "practical" gadgets such as a watch winding key, vesta case or a cigar cutter also appeared on watch chains, although usually in an overly decorated style. Also common are fasteners designed to be put through a buttonhole and worn in a jacket or waistcoat, this sort being frequently associated with and named after train conductors.

An early reference to the pocket watch is in a letter in November 1462 from the Italian clockmaker Bartholomew Manfredi to the Marchese di Manta[citation needed], where he offers him a 'pocket clock' better than that belonging to the Duke of Modena. By the end of the 15th Century, spring-driven clocks appeared in Italy, and in Germany. Peter Henlein, a master locksmith of Nuremberg, was regularly manufacturing pocket watches by 1524. Thereafter, pocket watch manufacture spread throughout the rest of Europe as the 16th century progressed. Early watches only had an hour hand, the minute hand appearing in the late 17th century.[1][2] The first American pocket watches with machine made parts was manufactured by Henry Pitkin with his brother in the later 1830s."

Now avid collectors: I am moving on to pocket watches myself. I love them. They are beautiful. Look at some of these photos:

and WHEN they come into style for women, just know that it was my idea. and aside from owning a vineyard one day in another incarnation, i will design pocket watches from women.

don't get sued, i have good lawyers ;)

the great legging escapade

since my weight-loss...
i have come to wearing a uniform of leggings and flowy shirts
or jackets.

one saturday, while it was still snowy...
LML and I found an opportunity to find one
such pair of nice black leggings.
on sunday morning?
i realize that he purchased an extra small?!

extra small??? do i look like an extra small to you?, i ask...
yep, LML says.
right. my ass is NOT getting in these.
yes it is.
oh god.

so we pull on the pair of leggings...
as a team effort.
and the effort doesn't go unrewarded,
because once past my hips
they feel great.

whew.

whew?

continuing our sunday morning, we made our way
to a little cafe called avenue, in astoria, new york...
to have a frappe, which is as close to a "GREEK" frappe as
you're going to get
without you going to greece :)

while sitting down, i pull my coat up around my legs
because the cafe was busy and people kept
coming in and out of the door next to us.

finishing our frappe, we had to continue on
to our food shopping adventure at
the local fresh-food market.
i figured, now is a good time to go to the bathroom
because the sugar in the frappe
(in greek, pronounced  FRA- peh)
is enough to make anyone loopy if they
don't get it out of their system fast enough.

so...
and sorry if i get icky for you here...
as i go to pull down my leggings, what do i see?

my thigh.
a ball of my thigh sticking out
the gaping hole
right near my crotch.

egads!
uh-oh.
good thing i bought the coat with me to the bathroom!
good thing the coat covers my bottom!
omg
imagine if i wore that vest this morning
that didn't cover anything??!

so i hurry out of the bathroom
and whisper into LML's ear...

houston, we have a problem.

what?

there is a hole in my leggings. near my crotch. we have to go.
block my ass just in case.

let me see.

uh NO. there are PEOPLE here EATING FOOD.
hell to the no.

this does not stop him from going to the fruit market.
this does not stop us from walking...
carefully...
to the shops up the block (thank GOD)

and finally...
FINALLY
finding another pair of leggings
that literally...
saved my ass.

or rather, my thigh.

the moral of the story here is: always check on your leggings :)

love,
mg

I cracked, got Crocs

Dear Bloggie Friends:
I know they look atrocious, but they are really quite nice.
I bought us a pair of matching ones, got them at a good price!
We've used them in a lot of places, and as you can see...
When LML tripped, he did not fall to his knees
He rinsed them, in order to keep them clean
The strap around his foot, helped him keep his hands free :)

So thank you for going with us
on the many adventures we had.
We can't wait to take you with us again
for without you, our feet would be sad!

Love,
MG

Inspiration: Bella Pilar!

(all photos from the Bella Pilar website. I am sorry if they are too big or too small or different colors. My computer has massive issues.)

OMG. The only words I have are:

Please tell me she lives in New York because I would LOVE LOVE to meet her! She must be one cool cookie- I wish there was more info about her on her website!

Inspiration!

(photo from http://catanyasthings.blogspot.com/2009/08/chanel-world.html which you should definitely check out!)

Chanel.

Ah, Chanel. The stuff that dreams are made of. Even when wandering the website, the MUSIC puts you in an outstanding mood. I would love to walk around their workshops & studios, just to get a glimpse and take pictures of what's going on behind the scenes. As we all know, that's where the real magic is made. I would even settle for going to a fashion show! But all things in due time...and moving on...

All the pieces that are and have ever been are effortlessly classic. There are not many designers that can master such a feat. I have a few pieces in my closet- but they cannot come out to play simply because they are too, too precious. They live next to the rare pieces I have found and acquired from other designers that shall not be mentioned.

The Chanel line for 2009-2010 Fall/Winter is almost Shakespearean in their own right. Simple, yet they move and sway like no other. Truly inspirational for this Tuesday morning.

I am so glad I mention Chanel in my manuscript :D

What inspires you today?!

MG

a new day, a new life

(that's baby me.)

There's a lot of things that you should know about me. My name, where I'm from, etc. but...
I'm not going to get into specific details- it'll be more mysterious that way, and these days people need a mystery.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am currently living in New York and am unemployed. Isn't that shocking? Fine, I'll spare you my weak attempt at a joke. This economy is just not funny. I do a lot to fill out my day, as I am a complete DIY woman who is married and always in the middle of 100 projects.

Literally. 100.

I have a lot of likes and dislikes and I know it's not easy to start a blog when people know you. I love to write, cook, craft, photograph events or just anything, scrapbook...so I discovered blogging as a way I can do all three :)

Believe me, my life? It's not boring. I do A LOT during the day.

I have a passion for books, the arts, reasearching and learning. Eating and Cooking, Cinema, Languages, Fashion, and especially Travel. I love learning about psychology and nutrition and things to do around New York or anywhere for free or close to it

(re: UNEMPLOYED)

Yep.
Unemployed writer living in New York.
How cliche is *that*?

I know a lot of people, been in a lot of situations and am not afraid to divulge.

*Ha.*

Today I will be baking banana bread and popping my okra in the oven before it gets warmer out- I woke up to a lovely fall-like day.

Thank you for joining me on my crazy journey through my life, and blogging :)

love me,
the globetrotting gamine
